Pool water testing and treatment

Clear water is balanced water. We test the parameters that matter, correct them in the right order, and solve the stubborn problems — cloudy water, scale, staining and sanitiser that never seems to last.

Pool chemistry is a set of linked values. pH decides how effective chlorine is; alkalinity decides how stable the pH is; calcium hardness decides whether water scales surfaces or etches them; stabiliser protects chlorine from sunlight but slows it down when it accumulates. Changing one moves the others.

Dubai adds its own pressures: very warm water, strong sun, high evaporation and fine dust. Treatment that works in a mild climate needs adjusting here, and the right balance in winter is not the right balance in August.

What water treatment covers

  • Comprehensive testing

Sanitiser, pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness, stabiliser and, where relevant, salt and phosphates.

  • Balancing in the right order

Alkalinity, then pH, then sanitiser — so each correction holds instead of fighting the next.

  • Cloudy water

Finding whether cloudiness comes from chemistry, filtration or fine debris, and treating the actual cause.

  • Scale and staining

Identifying scale at the waterline and stains from metals or organic matter, and correcting the water that causes them.

  • Stabiliser management

Measuring stabiliser and reducing it by partial water replacement when it has built up too far.

  • Salt systems

Keeping salt levels and chlorinator output matched to the season and the pool’s demand.

Signs the water needs attention

  • Strong chlorine smell or sore eyes

Often a sign of combined chlorine or low pH, not too much free chlorine.

  • White crust at the waterline

Scale from high calcium, high pH or both — common where evaporation is high.

  • Chlorine that disappears quickly

High demand from heat and organics, low stabiliser, or the opposite problem: too much stabiliser.

Common questions

Why does my pool smell strongly of chlorine?

That smell usually comes from chloramines — chlorine that has combined with sweat and organic matter — rather than from too much chlorine. The fix is usually to oxidise them and correct the balance, not to add less chlorine.

Is a salt pool chemical-free?

No. A salt chlorinator makes chlorine from dissolved salt. The water still needs testing and balancing, particularly pH, which tends to rise in salt pools.

How often should pool water be tested?

Sanitiser and pH change quickly in Dubai’s heat and should be checked frequently. Slower-moving values such as calcium hardness and stabiliser can be tested less often.
