Water, clarity and algae
Looking after a pool after heavy rain
Rain is rare in Dubai, which is exactly why pools are seldom ready for it. One heavy downpour can change the water in a single evening.

A heavy shower adds a large volume of fresh water quickly. It dilutes chlorine, alkalinity and stabiliser, tends to lower pH, and washes in dust from the air, soil from planting beds and leaves from the garden. The level often rises above the skimmer opening, which stops the skimmer collecting surface debris just when there is most of it.
Water guides explain what a reading or a symptom means and the order in which to correct it.
Plant rooms are another concern. Some villa plant rooms sit below garden level, and water entering them can reach pumps, controllers and electrical connections. Checking the plant room before restarting equipment is part of the recovery.
The short version
Chemistry is diluted
Chlorine and alkalinity fall, and pH often drops, so the water is less protected straight after rain.
Run-off brings organic load
Soil, fertiliser and leaves from planters and lawns use up chlorine and can feed algae.
A high level stops skimming
Above the skimmer mouth, floating debris is no longer pulled to the basket.
The recovery, step by step
Clear the debris
Net the surface, empty the skimmer and pump baskets and remove leaves from steps and corners.
Bring the level down
Lower the water to around the middle of the skimmer opening, using the waste setting or a pump.
Test, rebalance and filter
Restore alkalinity and pH, bring chlorine back up, and run filtration longer until the water is clear.
Once the rain has stopped
Look inside the plant room
Check for standing water around pumps and controls before switching anything back on.
Find where run-off entered
Soil channels from planters show where a small kerb or drainage change would help.
Watch clarity over the next days
Fine particles can keep the water hazy until the filter catches them.
Common questions
Should I shock the pool after rain?
Often, particularly when debris and soil have entered. Test and correct pH first so the dose works.
Why is the water cloudy after rain?
Fine dust and soil are suspended in the water while chlorine is diluted. Filtration and rebalancing usually clear it.
Can I swim straight after rain?
It is better to wait until the water has been tested and chlorine is back in range.
