Routine maintenance and cleaning
Storing pool chemicals safely at home
Pool chemicals are safe when used as directed and dangerous when stored carelessly, particularly in summer heat.

Most home pools keep at least two chemicals that must never meet: an acid for lowering pH and a chlorine product for sanitising. Mixed together, they can release harmful gas. Heat and sunlight make chlorine products degrade and, in some forms, become unstable, and summer temperatures in a closed store or plant room can be very high.
Routine guides describe one part of regular pool care and how to do it properly.
Safe storage means a cool, shaded, ventilated place out of reach of children and pets, with each chemical in its original labelled container, lids closed, and acids and chlorine kept apart — ideally on separate shelves or in separate areas so a leak from one cannot reach the other. Measuring scoops and jugs should be kept separate too.
The short version
Never let them mix
Acid and chlorine together can release harmful gas.
Keep them cool and shaded
Heat degrades chlorine and can make some products unstable.
Original labelled containers
Unmarked containers lead to mistakes.
Good storage practice
Separation
Acids and chlorine on different shelves or in different areas, with spill trays.
Ventilation
A ventilated space so any fumes do not build up.
Access
Locked or out of reach of children and pets.

Common questions
Can chemicals be stored in the plant room?
Only if it is ventilated, kept cool enough and chemicals are kept away from electrics and equipment.
How long do pool chemicals last?
Liquid chlorine loses strength over time, faster in heat. Buy quantities you will use.
What if containers leak?
Keep people away, ventilate and clean up following the label instructions.
Should chemicals be bought in bulk?
Only in amounts used within a reasonable time; stored chlorine weakens, especially in summer.
