Routine maintenance and cleaning

Maintaining an overflow pool’s balance tank

Overflow pools have a hidden second body of water — the balance tank — that needs as much attention as the pool itself.

In an overflow or deck-level pool, water spills over the edge into a gutter and drains to a balance tank, from which the pump draws it for filtration before returning it to the pool. The tank absorbs the water displaced by swimmers and holds the system’s reserve. If its level is wrong, the pump can run dry or the tank can overflow.

Routine guides describe one part of regular pool care and how to do it properly.

Balance tanks collect debris that passes through the gutter grilles, and their auto top-up valves and level sensors need checking. Gutters and grilles need regular cleaning to keep the overflow even and stop algae growing in the channel.

The short version

  • A hidden reservoir

The tank feeds the pump and absorbs displaced water.

  • Levels matter

Too low starves the pump; too high overflows.

  • Gutters need cleaning

Grilles and channels collect debris and algae.

Maintenance tasks

  • Tank inspection

Checking level, debris and the condition of float valves and sensors.

  • Gutter cleaning

Lifting and cleaning grilles and brushing the channel.

  • Top-up systems

Ensuring the auto fill responds correctly and does not run constantly.

  • Chemistry across both bodies of water

Testing is done on water that has circulated through the tank, and dosing accounts for the extra volume the tank holds.

Owner checks

  1. 01

    Even overflow

Water should spill evenly along the edge.

  2. 02

    Tank level

Within the marked range, if visible.

  3. 03

    Constant top-up noise

    May indicate a valve problem.

Common questions

Why does the pool not overflow evenly?

Blocked grilles, an uneven edge or level issues can cause uneven flow.

Can the balance tank grow algae?

Yes, if not cleaned and chlorinated properly.

Does an overflow pool need more maintenance?

It has extra components that need regular attention.

Where should chemicals be added in an overflow pool?

Wherever the system was designed for dosing — often the balance tank or a dosing point — so they mix before returning to the pool.

Ask about your pool

Tell us where the pool is and what you are seeing. A photograph of the pool and the plant room helps us plan the visit.
