Particular pools and situations

Getting a pool ready for a party, and back afterwards

A pool party puts more swimmers, sunscreen and spilled drinks into the water in an afternoon than a family adds in a week.

Every swimmer adds sweat, sunscreen, cosmetics and other organic matter, and a busy party adds food, drinks and debris from the deck. That load uses up chlorine quickly and forms chloramines — the source of the strong chlorine smell and stinging eyes that often follow a party. Preparing the pool beforehand, and recovering it afterwards, keeps the water comfortable and clear.

These guides adapt pool care to a particular season, household or type of pool.

Before the event, the pool should be clean, balanced and holding a healthy chlorine level, with the filter recently cleaned and baskets empty. Afterwards, the debris comes out, the water is tested, and a shock dose — once pH is right — breaks down what the swimmers left. Extra filtration overnight helps the water clear.

The short version

  • Start clean and balanced

A pool that is right before the party copes far better with the load.

  • Expect chlorine to drop

Many swimmers use up chlorine and form chloramines.

  • Recover the same evening or next morning

Prompt treatment stops dull water and smell setting in.

Before and after

  • The day before

Clean, brush, vacuum, balance pH and alkalinity, raise chlorine within the normal range and clean the filter.

  • During the party

No glass at the poolside, and a quick skim of floating debris if possible.

  • Afterwards

Remove debris, test, shock with pH in range, run filtration longer and clean the filter once it has loaded.

Party-day precautions

  • Keep glass away from the pool

Broken glass in a pool may mean draining to find every piece.

  • Lock away chemicals

Guests and children should not reach the plant room or stored products.

  • Keep the cover off during use

And make sure safety barriers are in place for young children.

Common questions

Should I shock the pool before guests arrive?

No. Swimming should wait after a shock until chlorine falls back. Shock afterwards instead.

Why does the pool smell stronger after a party?

Chloramines form when chlorine reacts with sweat and sunscreen. A shock dose clears them.

What if glass breaks in the pool?

Keep everyone out and arrange careful removal; fine fragments are hard to see in water.
