Looking after a plunge pool

A plunge pool holds far less water than a family pool. Every dose, every swimmer and every hot day has a bigger effect.

Plunge pools are common on townhouse terraces, courtyards and rooftop decks. Their small volume makes them quick to heat and cool, but it also means chemistry changes quickly. A dose sized for a larger pool can push pH or chlorine far out of range, and one busy afternoon can use up most of the chlorine.

These guides adapt pool care to a particular season, household or type of pool.

Good care is about precision: knowing the exact volume, measuring doses carefully, testing more often, and making sure the filtration and any heater or chiller are suited to the small volume. Sun exposure on terraces can make the water very warm in summer.

The short version

  • Small volume, big swings

Chemistry reacts quickly to doses and use.

  • Measure doses precisely

    Calculate from the actual volume.

  • Test often

Changes happen faster than in larger pools.

Plunge pool care

  • Volume calculation

Accurate measurements so doses are correct.

  • Temperature control

Heaters or chillers matched to the small volume, with shading where possible.

  • Filtration

Run times set to turn the small volume over properly.

  • Bather load in a small pool

Two or three people in a plunge pool add as much load relative to the volume as a crowd in a large pool, so chlorine drops quickly after use.

Watch for

  • Rapid chlorine loss

    Especially on hot days.

  • pH swings

    After small doses.

  • Very warm water

    In summer on terraces.

Common questions

Can I use the same products as a large pool?

Yes, but in much smaller, carefully measured amounts.

Does a plunge pool need a cover?

A cover helps control temperature and debris.

Is a salt system suitable?

It can be, with output set for the small volume.

How often should a plunge pool be tested?

More often than a large pool — after heavy use and on hot days, as well as at each maintenance visit.
