Deciding how your pool is looked after

What decides the cost of pool maintenance

Two pools of the same size can cost very different amounts to maintain. The difference is in a handful of factors you can see.

The price of routine maintenance depends first on how often the pool is visited and how long each visit takes. Visit length depends on the pool’s size and shape, the debris load from trees, sand and wind, and how much equipment there is to check. Frequency depends on the season and how heavily the pool is used.

Decision guides help owners judge how a pool is looked after and when to escalate.

Chemicals are the second factor: whether they are included, which ones are used, and how much the pool consumes. Hot, sunny, busy pools use more. Then there are extras outside routine care — shock treatments, green pool recovery, stain treatment, filter media changes and equipment repairs — which are usually quoted separately. Understanding each factor makes quotations easier to compare.

The short version

  • Visit frequency and length

Season, use, debris and pool size decide both.

  • Chemicals

Included or extra, and how much the pool consumes.

  • Extras

Treatments, repairs and media changes are usually priced separately.

Factors that change the price

  • Pool size and features

Larger pools, overflow gutters, infinity edges and water features take longer to clean.

  • Setting

Trees, open sand and wind exposure add cleaning time and filter care.

  • Equipment

Heat pumps, chillers, salt cells and dosing systems add checks and servicing.

To compare quotations fairly

  • Match the visit frequency

Weekly and fortnightly quotes are not comparable.

  • Check chemical inclusion

And how extra treatments are charged.

  • Check what equipment care is included

    Backwashing, cell cleaning, filter cleaning.

Common questions

Why is there no price on this page?

Because it depends on your pool, setting and use. A visit or photographs let us quote accurately.

Does a salt pool cost less to maintain?

It can reduce chlorine purchases, but cell care and balancing are still needed.

Are summer visits more expensive?

More frequent visits in summer increase the overall cost, even if each visit is the same price.
