Deciding how your pool is looked after

When a pool problem needs a technician

Adding more chlorine fixes many pool problems. It does not fix a failing pump, a broken filter or an electrical fault.

Owners often respond to any pool problem by adding chemicals. That works when the cause is chemistry: low chlorine after heavy use, pH drift, a light algae bloom. It does not work when the cause is mechanical or electrical. A pump that is not circulating water, a filter with broken internals, a salt cell that has stopped producing or a heater with a fault will keep the water poor however much chlorine is added.

Decision guides help owners judge how a pool is looked after and when to escalate.

Some signs point clearly to equipment: new noises, water dripping from fittings, breakers tripping, pressure readings far from normal, sand in the pool, or water that will not clear despite good test results. Electrical faults and anything involving pool lights or wiring are always for a qualified technician.

The short version

  • Chemistry problems respond to chemicals

    Equipment problems do not.

  • Noises, leaks and trips are equipment signs

    They need diagnosis, not dosing.

  • Electrical issues are never DIY

Pool electrics need a qualified person.

Signs it is equipment, not chemistry

  • Water will not clear

Despite balanced readings and long filtration.

  • Abnormal pressure or flow

Pressure far above or below normal, or weak jets.

  • Unusual sounds or smells

Grinding, screeching or a burning smell from equipment.

Before calling

  • Note what you see and hear

Photos and short videos help diagnosis.

  • Record the readings

    Water tests and pressure gauge.

  • Switch off if unsafe

Tripping, smoke or burning smells mean switch off.

Common questions

Should I keep adding chlorine while waiting?

Keeping chlorine in range protects the water, but it will not fix an equipment fault.

Is a dripping pump urgent?

A small drip is not an emergency but should be repaired before it worsens.

What if the breaker keeps tripping?

Leave it off and have the equipment inspected.

Ask about your pool
