A pool light that has stopped working

Pool lights put electricity underwater. Most faults are straightforward, but every one of them is a job for someone qualified.

When a pool light goes out, the cause is usually one of three things. The lamp or LED module may have reached the end of its life. The transformer or driver that supplies it, often in the plant room or a nearby enclosure, may have failed. Or water may have entered the fitting through a perished seal, which can cause the light to fail and is a safety concern in its own right.

Equipment guides cover servicing and faults on the plant an existing pool already has.

Repairs begin by isolating the supply. The fitting is then lifted from its niche — most are designed with enough cable to bring them to the deck without draining the pool — and the lamp, seals and cable are inspected. Many modern pool lights are sealed units that are replaced as a whole rather than opened.

The short version

  • Isolate before anything else

No one should handle a pool light or its supply while it is live.

  • Three usual causes

The lamp, the transformer or driver, or water in the fitting.

  • Water ingress matters

Moisture inside the lens means the seal has failed and the fitting must be inspected.

What a technician checks

  • Supply and protection

The transformer or driver output, and the protective devices on the lighting circuit.

  • The fitting

Lamp or LED module, lens seal and gasket, and signs of corrosion inside.

  • The cable

Its condition along the conduit and at the junction box.

Before calling

  • Check the switch and any timer

Lighting timers and remotes sometimes lose their settings.

  • Look at the lens

Visible water or condensation inside is worth photographing.

  • Leave the fitting closed

Do not try to open or remove it yourself.

Common questions

Can I change the bulb myself?

Because pool lighting combines water and electricity, it should be handled by a qualified technician.

Why is there water inside the light?

A lens gasket or cable seal has failed. The fitting needs inspecting and resealing or replacing.

Does the pool need draining?

Usually not. Most fittings can be lifted to the deck on their cable.
