Deciding how your pool is looked after

When a pool problem goes beyond maintenance

Maintenance and repairs keep a pool running. Some problems need a different kind of specialist, and saying so early saves time.

Most pool problems fall within maintenance and equipment repair: water chemistry, cleaning, pumps, filters, heaters and chlorinators. Some do not. Structural cracks in the shell, large areas of hollow or falling tiles, failing plaster or coatings, persistent water loss that cannot be traced to equipment, and major reconfiguration of the pool belong to construction, renovation or leak detection specialists.

Decision guides help owners judge how a pool is looked after and when to escalate.

Recognising these early helps owners avoid repeated maintenance attempts that cannot solve the underlying problem. Our role is to say so plainly, keep the pool running safely in the meantime, and describe what we have seen so the specialist starts with good information.

The short version

  • Structure and surfaces

Cracks, hollow tiles and failing finishes need specialists.

  • Untraced water loss

Leak detection is a separate service.

  • Clear referral

Saying so early avoids wasted effort.

Problems outside routine care

  • Structural cracks

Cracks in the shell or deck that widen or leak.

  • Surface failure

Large areas of loose tiles or failing plaster.

  • Persistent water loss

Loss not explained by evaporation or equipment.

What we can still do

  • Keep the water safe

    Maintain chemistry and cleaning meanwhile.

  • Document what we see

Photos and notes for the specialist.

  • Check equipment-side causes

Rule out leaks and faults at the plant.

Common questions

Can a crack be patched during maintenance?

Structural cracks need assessment by a specialist before any repair.

Why not just keep topping up?

Persistent water loss can damage surroundings and should be investigated.

Will you still maintain the pool?

Yes, maintenance can continue while specialist work is arranged.

Who should I contact for a leak investigation?

A leak detection specialist; we can share our observations about equipment and water loss with them.
