Pumps, filters and equipment
Programming a variable speed pool pump
A variable speed pump saves energy by running slower for longer. The schedule still has to give every piece of equipment the flow it needs.

A variable speed pump can run anywhere between a gentle low speed and full power. Pumping at a lower speed uses disproportionately less energy, so many pools filter well with long, slow running. But some tasks need more flow: priming the pump after it has been off, backwashing a sand filter, driving a suction or pressure cleaner, and satisfying the minimum flow of heaters, chillers and salt chlorinators.
Equipment guides cover servicing and faults on the plant an existing pool already has.
A good programme therefore has a short priming period at higher speed, long blocks of low-speed filtration, and higher-speed windows timed for cleaners, skimming or heating. If the water turns dull or equipment reports low flow, the speed or duration of the main block is the first thing to revisit.
The short version
Low speed for routine filtration
Long, slow running moves the pool volume through the filter efficiently.
Higher speed for specific jobs
Priming, backwashing, cleaners and good skimming need more flow.
Equipment sets the minimum
Heaters, chillers and salt cells will not run below their flow requirement.
Building the schedule
Priming period
A few minutes at higher speed after each start so the pump fills and pushes out trapped air.
Main filtration block
The longest period, at the lowest speed that still gives clear water and keeps the skimmers working.
Task windows
Higher speed for the cleaner, for heating periods, and for backwashing when needed.
Revisit the settings when
Clarity drops
Add hours or a little speed to the main block.
A heater or chlorinator reports low flow
Raise speed during the periods it needs to run.
Skimmers stop pulling debris
The surface needs enough flow to reach the skimmer baskets.
Common questions
Should the pump always run at its lowest speed?
It is most efficient, but only if it still filters the pool properly and meets equipment minimums.
Why will my heater not start?
Often because flow at the current speed is below the heater’s requirement.
Should the schedule change by season?
Yes. Summer typically needs longer or faster running than the cooler months.
