Maintaining an automatic pool dosing system
Automatic dosing keeps chemistry steady between visits. Probes drift and tubing wears, and an unmaintained system doses with confidence and without accuracy.

An automatic dosing system measures the water with probes — pH, and chlorine or ORP — and runs small dosing pumps to add acid or chlorine when readings move away from the set points. When it works, the pool stays more consistent than manual dosing allows. When a probe drifts, or a tube cracks, the system keeps dosing to a wrong reading or stops dosing altogether.
Equipment guides cover servicing and faults on the plant an existing pool already has.
Maintenance keeps it honest. Probes are cleaned and calibrated against reference solutions, and their readings compared with a manual test. Dosing pumps, tubing, injection points and non-return valves are inspected for wear, kinks and crystallised chemical. Tanks are kept topped up, labelled and stored so different chemicals cannot mix.
The short version
Probes drift
Readings move over time, so calibration is part of routine care.
Tubing and valves wear
Chemicals harden and crack tubing; blocked injectors stop dosing.
Empty tanks stop everything
A system cannot dose from a dry tank, however good its probes.
Routine tasks
Calibration
Cleaning probes and calibrating with fresh reference solutions, then checking against a manual test.
Pump and line checks
Tubing, foot valves, injection fittings and non-return valves inspected and replaced when worn.
Chemical handling
Refilling tanks with the correct product, labelling them and keeping acid and chlorine apart.
Owner checks between visits
Compare readings with a manual test
A growing gap means the probes need attention.
Look at the tubing
Cracks, kinks or crystal build-up are worth reporting.
Watch tank levels
Plan refills before they run dry, especially in summer.
Common questions
How often should probes be calibrated?
As the manufacturer recommends, and whenever readings disagree with a reliable manual test.
Does automation replace testing?
No. Manual tests are what confirm the system is reading correctly.
What if the system has overdosed?
Stop dosing, keep swimmers out, test the water and correct it before restarting.
