A pool pump that will not start

A silent pump and a humming pump that will not turn are two different faults. Which one you have narrows the cause quickly.

If the pump is completely silent, the cause is usually upstream: a timer or controller that has lost its programme after a power cut, a tripped breaker or residual current device, an isolator switched off, or a fault in the controller. Checking those, safely and without opening electrical enclosures, often finds the problem.

Equipment guides cover servicing and faults on the plant an existing pool already has.

If the motor hums but does not turn, the motor is receiving power but cannot start. Common causes are a failed start capacitor on single-phase motors, a seized impeller from debris or scale, or bearings that have locked. These need a technician, and the pump should be switched off rather than left humming.

The short version

  • Silent pump

Points to power, timer, controller or protective devices.

  • Humming pump

Points to the motor — capacitor, seized impeller or locked bearings.

  • Switch off a humming pump

Leaving it humming can overheat the motor.

What a technician checks

  • Controls and timers

Programme, clock, relay outputs and any automation that may be holding the pump off.

  • Electrical protection

Why a breaker or RCD tripped — moisture, a failing motor or a wiring fault.

  • Motor and wet end

Capacitor, bearings and whether the impeller turns freely.

Safe checks before calling

  • Check the timer and controller

Look for a blank display or a reset clock after a power cut.

  • Look at the breaker

If it has tripped once, reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off.

  • Listen at the motor

Silent or humming tells a technician a great deal.

Common questions

Can a power cut stop the pump permanently?

Many timers lose their programme after a power cut, leaving the pump off until reset.

Why does the breaker trip when the pump starts?

Moisture in the motor or wiring, or a failing motor, are common reasons. It needs inspecting.

How long can the pool go without the pump?

In summer, water deteriorates quickly. Chlorine and clarity can suffer within a few days.
