Servicing a pool heat pump or chiller

Heat pumps and chillers sit idle for months, then are expected to work on the first cold or hot day. A service before the season avoids that surprise.

Air-source heat pump unit standing outside a modern house

In Dubai, many pools use a heat pump in the cooler months and a chiller, or the same unit in reverse, in summer. Between seasons the unit may not run at all. Dust settles on the coil, condensate drains block with debris, insects nest in the casing, terminals loosen with heat cycles and settings are lost in power cuts. None of that shows until the unit is needed.

Equipment guides cover servicing and faults on the plant an existing pool already has.

A seasonal service covers the air side, the water side and the controls: cleaning the coil and checking the fan, clearing the condensate drain, checking water flow and connections for leaks, inspecting electrical terminals, and running the unit to confirm it reaches temperature and reports no faults.

The short version

  • Clean coils move more heat

Dust on the coil cuts output and makes the compressor work harder.

  • Clear condensate drainage

Blocked drains overflow into the unit base and around equipment.

  • Test before you need it

Faults found at a service are easier to fix than on the first cold evening.

What a service covers

  • Air side

Coil cleaning, fan and motor checks, and clearing anything blocking airflow around the unit.

  • Water side

Flow through the exchanger, the flow switch, unions and connections for leaks or corrosion.

  • Electrical and controls

Terminals, contactors, settings, sensors and a test run with any fault codes recorded.

When to book it

  • Before the heating season

For heat pumps, ahead of the first cooler weeks.

  • Before peak summer

For chillers, ahead of the hottest months.

  • After a heavy dust storm

Coils clogged with dust lose efficiency quickly.

Common questions

How often should a heat pump be serviced?

Typically before each season of use, and after dusty weather if the coil is visibly dirty.

Can I clean the coil myself?

Light dust can often be rinsed gently with the power off, following the manufacturer’s guidance. Fins bend easily.

Does servicing save energy?

A clean coil and correct flow generally let the unit reach temperature using less energy.
