Comparing pool care choices

Repairing or replacing a pool pump

A pump that has started to grind, leak or trip is not necessarily finished. Whether to repair it depends on what failed and how old it is.

Many pump faults are repairable. Shaft seals that let water drip from the pump, bearings that have started to grind, a failed start capacitor or a cracked lid are routine repairs with readily available parts. On a pump in otherwise good condition, repairing them is usually sensible and quicker than sourcing a new unit.

Comparison guides set two pool care choices side by side and say when each suits.

Replacement becomes the better choice when the motor windings have failed, the pump housing is cracked, parts are no longer available, or an old pump has needed repeated repairs. Running cost is part of the picture too: older single-speed pumps use more power than many modern alternatives, which can tip the balance when a major repair is due.

The short version

  • Seals, bearings and capacitors are repairable

Routine parts on a sound pump.

  • Motor or housing failure points to replacement

    Especially on older units.

  • Age and parts availability matter

Repeated repairs on an old pump add up.

Factors in the decision

  • What failed

Wear parts versus the motor or the housing itself.

  • Age and history

An old pump with several recent repairs is nearing the end.

  • Running cost

Energy use over the coming years compared with the repair cost.

Before deciding

  • Get a diagnosis

Know exactly which part has failed.

  • Check parts availability

    For the pump model.

  • Ask about running costs

For the current pump and any replacement option.

Common questions

Is a leaking pump always finished?

No. A leaking shaft seal is a common, repairable fault.

Can a repaired pump last well?

Yes, if the rest of the pump is in good condition.

Who chooses a replacement?

We can advise on a like-for-like replacement for the existing system; changes to the system design belong to a pool systems specialist.
