Comparing pool care choices
Treating a green pool or draining it
Most green pools can be cleared without draining. A few cannot. The difference lies in the water chemistry, not just the colour.

A green pool can look hopeless, but in most cases it can be recovered in place: equipment checked, debris removed, pH balanced, a heavy chlorine dose applied, walls and floor brushed and the filter run continuously and cleaned until the water clears. That keeps the water, avoids the risks of draining and is usually the quicker route.
Comparison guides set two pool care choices side by side and say when each suits.
Draining becomes worth considering when the water chemistry itself is the barrier: stabiliser so high that chlorine cannot work, hardness or dissolved solids far out of range, or a pool full of sludge and debris after long neglect. Even then, partial draining may be enough. Fully emptying a pool carries risks to the shell and finishes and should not be done without advice.
The short version
Treat in place in most cases
Balanced water, heavy chlorine, brushing and filtration clear most green pools.
Chemistry can rule treatment out
Very high stabiliser blocks chlorine from working.
Draining has risks
Shell and finish damage are possible when a pool is emptied.
How the decision is made
Test first
Especially stabiliser, which decides whether chlorine can do the job.
Judge the debris
Deep sludge after long neglect may justify removing water.
Consider partial draining
Diluting part of the water can unlock treatment without emptying the pool.
Before any draining

Construction and ground conditions vary.
Check discharge rules
Where the water may be drained.
Plan the refill and balance
Fresh water needs balancing straight away.
Common questions
Is draining faster than treating?
Not usually. Treating in place often clears the water sooner and keeps it in the pool.
Can a very dark green pool be saved?
Often yes, with enough chlorine, filtration and time.
Why might draining be risky?
An empty pool can be affected by ground water and heat on exposed finishes.
