Particular pools and situations

Restarting a pool that has been left unused

Pools left for months — in empty villas, between tenants or during a long absence — need a careful restart, not just a dose of chlorine.

Algae-stained tiles and debris on the floor of a neglected pool

An unused pool usually has three problems at once. The water is stagnant and often green or dark, with debris on the floor. The equipment may not have run for a long time, so seals can be dry, impellers stuck and electrics affected by dust or moisture. And the water chemistry is far from balanced.

These guides adapt pool care to a particular season, household or type of pool.

The restart therefore begins in the plant room. Equipment is inspected before it is switched on, baskets cleared, and the pump started carefully. Only then does recovery of the water begin: debris removal, balancing, shocking and continuous filtration, with the filter cleaned repeatedly as it loads.

The short version

  • Check equipment first

Seized pumps or damaged seals can fail when restarted.

  • Remove debris

Leaves and sludge consume chlorine and block equipment.

  • Recover the water in sequence

Balance, shock, brush and filter until clear.

The restart sequence

  • Equipment inspection

Pump, filter, valves, electrics and chlorinator checked before power is restored.

  • Water recovery

Debris removal, balancing and heavy shock with continuous filtration.

  • Ongoing care

A regular routine restarted so the pool does not slip back.

Before restarting

  • Do not switch on blindly

    Have the equipment inspected first.

  • Look for leaks

Dry seals may leak once pressurised.

  • Plan for several days

    Recovery takes time.

Common questions

Should an unused pool be drained?

Usually not. Most can be recovered without draining, which carries its own risks.

Why did the pump leak when restarted?

Seals can dry and shrink when equipment is idle for long periods.

How long does a restart take?

It depends on the water condition and equipment; several days is common.

Can the filter cope with all the debris?

It will load quickly. Expect to clean or backwash it several times during the first days of recovery.
