Particular pools and situations
Looking after a pool used by young children
Children spend longer in the water, swallow more of it and are more sensitive to its balance. Pool care has to account for them.

Young children are often in the pool for hours, with their eyes open underwater and their skin in contact with the water for long periods. Balanced pH and well-controlled chlorine make the water more comfortable and reduce red eyes and dry skin. Chloramines from heavy use should be cleared rather than left to build up.
These guides adapt pool care to a particular season, household or type of pool.
Chemical safety matters as much as water quality. Products must be stored out of reach and locked away, treatments such as shock doses scheduled when the pool will not be used, and dosing done when children are not nearby.

Common questions
Are salt pools better for children?
Many people find them gentler, but balance still matters.
How soon after shock can children swim?
Only after chlorine returns to normal on a test.
Do toys affect water quality?
They can carry algae and dirt; clean them regularly.
How can I make the water gentler on skin?
Keeping pH in range, avoiding chloramine build-up and rinsing after swimming make the biggest difference.
