Comparing pool care choices

Liquid chlorine or chlorine tablets

Tablets are convenient. Liquid chlorine is easier to control. Which suits a pool depends mostly on what each one leaves behind in the water.

Chlorine tablets, usually trichlor, dissolve slowly in a floater, skimmer or feeder and release chlorine steadily. They are convenient between visits. They also contain stabiliser (cyanuric acid), which builds up with every tablet, and they are acidic, so they tend to lower pH and alkalinity over time. After months of tablet use, stabiliser can reach levels where chlorine works poorly and the only practical fix is replacing part of the water.

Comparison guides set two pool care choices side by side and say when each suits.

Liquid chlorine (sodium hypochlorite) adds no stabiliser, works quickly and lets doses be matched precisely to the pool’s needs. It raises pH slightly when added. It needs more frequent dosing, it is heavy to carry and store, and it loses strength in storage, particularly in Dubai heat. Many professionally maintained pools use liquid chlorine for control and use tablets only sparingly, if at all.

The short version

  • Tablets add stabiliser with every dose

Over months that build-up weakens chlorine.

  • Liquid gives control

Doses can be matched closely to demand, with no stabiliser added.

  • They push pH in opposite directions

Tablets tend to lower pH; liquid chlorine raises it slightly.

How they compare in practice

  • Between visits

Tablets keep releasing chlorine on their own; liquid needs dosing or an automatic feeder.

  • Long-term water balance

Tablet pools usually need stabiliser monitoring and periodic dilution; liquid pools rarely do.

  • Storage

Tablets store compactly but must be kept dry and apart from other chemicals; liquid loses strength in heat.

Questions that decide it

  • How often is the pool visited?

Infrequent visits favour a steady source; frequent visits make liquid easy.

  • What is the stabiliser level now?

If it is already high, adding tablets makes it worse.

  • Is there a salt cell or dosing system?

Then neither may be needed routinely.

Common questions

Can tablets and liquid be used together?

Yes, but they should never be mixed in a container, and stabiliser should be monitored.

Why does my pool need acid less with tablets?

Tablets are acidic, which offsets pH rise. That also lowers alkalinity over time.

Does liquid chlorine damage equipment?

Not when diluted and added correctly, away from metal fittings.
