Water, clarity and algae

When pool pH is too low

Low pH is less common than high pH in Dubai pools, but it does more lasting damage when it is left.

Water samples in test tubes showing colour reactions during testing

Water with low pH is aggressive. It dissolves what it touches: grout lines soften, plaster and cement finishes etch, and metal parts — ladders, heat exchanger tubes, pump seals and light niches — corrode. Swimmers notice it as stinging eyes and itchy skin. Chlorine also disappears faster, because it is being consumed more quickly.

Water guides explain what a reading or a symptom means and the order in which to correct it.

Low pH usually follows an overdose of acid, a long run of stabilised chlorine tablets, or heavy rain diluting the water. It is also easier to cause in small pools and plunge pools, where a single dose changes the chemistry more.

The short version

  • It attacks the pool

Grout, cement finishes and metal fittings are slowly dissolved by acidic water.

  • It often follows a dose

Acid added without retesting, or tablets used for a long time, are the usual causes.

  • Raise it gradually

Adding a large correction at once can cloud the water and overshoot.

How low pH is corrected

  • Raising alkalinity

Where alkalinity is also low, it is raised first so pH has a buffer and stops falling.

  • Raising pH directly

A pH increaser is added in measured steps with the pump running and retested after circulation.

  • Checking the cause

Dosing habits, tablet use and rainfall are reviewed so the problem does not return next week.

Look out for these signs

  • Rough or etched grout

Grout that feels sandy or has receded can point to long periods of low pH.

  • Green or blue staining

Copper from corroding fittings can stain surfaces and hair.

  • Chlorine disappearing quickly

Low pH speeds up chlorine loss and makes the pool hard to keep sanitised.

Common questions

Does rain lower pool pH?

Heavy rain can lower pH and alkalinity by diluting the water and adding slightly acidic water. A test after rain shows whether it needs correcting.

Can low pH damage a heat pump?

Yes. Aggressive water can corrode the heat exchanger over time, which is why balanced water matters for heated pools.

How quickly should low pH be fixed?

As soon as it is found. A short period does little harm; weeks of low pH start to damage surfaces and fittings.

Ask about your pool

A clear photograph and your latest test reading are usually enough for a useful first answer.

Next step

Worried about low pH damage?

Send a test reading and photographs of the grout and fittings. We will check the water and the condition of the surfaces it has been touching.
