Dealing with a contamination incident in a private pool
Accidents happen, especially with young children. A calm, standard response deals with them properly.

Faecal or vomit contamination can introduce germs that normal chlorine levels may not deal with quickly, particularly where the material is loose. The first steps are the same in every case: get everyone out of the water, remove as much of the material as possible without vacuuming it through the filter, and keep the pool closed while the water is treated.
These guides adapt pool care to a particular season, household or type of pool.
Treatment usually means raising chlorine well above normal for a period, with pH in range so the chlorine works effectively, while the filter runs. The pool reopens only once chlorine has come back down to the normal range on a test. The scoop or net used should be disinfected afterwards.
The short version
Clear the pool
Everyone out until treatment is finished.
Remove, do not vacuum
Scoop the material out rather than sending it to the filter.
Treat and retest
Raised chlorine for a period, then back to normal before reopening.
The response
Removal
Using a net or scoop, disposed of hygienically, and the tool disinfected.
Treatment
pH corrected, chlorine raised and held while the filter runs.
Reopening
After chlorine returns to the normal range and the water is clear.
Be prepared
Know where the test kit is
You will need it to confirm reopening.
Use swim nappies
For young children, to reduce the risk.
Have a contact
Someone who can carry out the treatment if you prefer not to.
Common questions
Is a firm stool as concerning as loose contamination?
Loose contamination generally needs a longer, stronger treatment. Ask for advice if unsure.
Should the filter be cleaned afterwards?
Backwashing or cleaning the filter after treatment is sensible.
When can we swim again?
Only once chlorine has returned to the normal range on a test and the water is clear.
