Pumps, filters and equipment

A pool pump that has become noisy

Pumps change their sound before they fail. Listening carefully tells you whether it is a basket to empty or a motor to look at.

A healthy pool pump makes a steady hum and a smooth rush of water. New noises usually fall into a few groups. A high-pitched screech or grinding from the motor end often means worn bearings. A gravelly rattle from the wet end suggests the pump is starved of water — cavitation — because a basket is blocked, a valve is partly closed or the water level is low. A knocking or clicking can mean debris has reached the impeller.

Equipment guides cover servicing and faults on the plant an existing pool already has.

Some causes are quick to check: the skimmer and pump baskets, valve positions and the water level. Others, such as bearings, need the motor opened. Running a pump that is grinding or starved for long periods shortens its life, so a change in sound is worth acting on early.

The short version

  • Grinding from the motor

Usually bearings wearing out, often after water has reached them through a failed seal.

  • Gravelly rattle from the wet end

Cavitation: the pump is not getting enough water, from a blockage, a closed valve or a low level.

  • Clicking or knocking

Debris such as a stone, seed or broken basket piece at the impeller.

Checking a noisy pump

  • Baskets and level first

Empty the skimmer and pump baskets and check the water is halfway up the skimmer opening.

  • Valves and suction lines

A partly closed suction valve or a blocked main drain starves the pump in the same way as a full basket.

  • The motor itself

Bearing noise, heat and a burning smell call for the motor to be checked by a technician.

Before calling anyone

  • Record the sound

A short video with sound helps a technician judge it remotely.

  • Note when it started

After a clean, a backwash or a storm points to a blockage or air.

  • Feel for heat

A motor too hot to touch comfortably should be switched off and checked.

Common questions

Can bearings be replaced or does the motor need replacing?

Bearings can often be replaced. Whether it is worthwhile depends on the motor’s age and condition, which is checked when it is opened.

Why is my pump louder at night?

It may not be louder; there is simply less background noise. If it has changed, the causes are the same.

Is a noisy pump dangerous?

Mostly it is a warning of wear. A burning smell, tripping or sparking is a reason to switch off and have it inspected.
