Filter sand returning to the pool

Small piles of fine, even-sized sand near the return jets usually mean something inside the filter has broken.

A sand filter holds its media in place with laterals — slotted arms at the bottom of the tank — and a central standpipe. Laterals become brittle with age and can crack under pressure, often during a backwash. Once one breaks, sand passes through and is pumped back into the pool, where it collects on the floor near the returns.

Equipment guides cover servicing and faults on the plant an existing pool already has.

It is worth confirming that the sand really is filter media: garden sand blown in during a storm looks different, with mixed grain sizes and colours. If it is media, the fix is to open the filter, remove the sand, replace damaged laterals or the standpipe, and refill with media of the correct grade. A damaged multiport valve or media that is too fine for the laterals can cause the same symptom.

The short version

  • Broken laterals are the usual cause

Age and pressure crack them, letting media through.

  • Check it is really filter sand

Uniform grains near the returns point to the filter; mixed sand points to the wind.

  • The filter has to be opened

The media is removed to reach and replace the internals.

How the filter is repaired

  • Emptying the tank

The system is isolated and drained, and the media removed down to the laterals.

  • Replacing the internals

Cracked laterals or a damaged standpipe are replaced with parts that fit the filter model.

  • Refilling and testing

The correct grade of media is added, then the filter is backwashed and rinsed before normal running.

Before calling

  • Note where sand appears

Near the returns suggests the filter; near the skimmers suggests outside sources.

  • Note when it appears

Sand straight after backwashing is a strong sign of a broken lateral.

  • Collect a sample

A photo of the grains next to a coin helps identify the media.

Common questions

Do laterals break with age?

Yes. The plastic becomes brittle over time, especially in hot plant rooms.

Is it urgent?

Sand passing through can wear the pump and other equipment, so it should be repaired soon.

Can I vacuum the sand out meanwhile?

Yes, ideally to waste, but it will keep returning until the filter is repaired.
