Pumps, filters and equipment

How long to run a pool pump each day

Run time depends on the pool’s volume, the pump’s flow, the season and how busy the pool is. The goal is enough filtration, not the most hours.

The pump moves water through the filter and carries chlorine around the pool. A common starting point is to filter the whole pool volume at least once a day — one turnover — and then adjust. In a Dubai summer, with warm water, strong sun, dust and more swimming, many pools need more than that; in the cooler months, less.

Equipment guides cover servicing and faults on the plant an existing pool already has.

When the pump runs matters too. Running through cooler hours can be efficient, but some filtration while the pool is in use helps clear what swimmers bring in, and salt chlorinators and heaters only work while water is flowing. A schedule is usually split into blocks rather than one long run.

The short version

  • Start from turnover

The time it takes the pump to move the pool’s full volume through the filter.

  • More in summer

Heat, dust and swimming increase the filtration a pool needs.

  • Equipment runs with the pump

Salt cells, heaters and chillers only work while water flows.

Setting a schedule

  • Working out turnover

Pool volume divided by the pump’s actual flow — which depends on pipework and filter condition, not just the label.

  • Adjusting for conditions

Longer during heat, dust or heavy use; shorter in cooler, quieter weeks.

  • Variable speed pumps

Running longer at lower speed often filters as well while using less energy.

Review the schedule when

  • The water turns dull

More filtration time is often the first fix.

  • The season changes

Move to summer or winter hours.

  • Equipment changes

A new pump, filter or chlorinator changes flow and requirements.

Common questions

Can the pump run only at night?

Some daytime running helps when the pool is in use and keeps a salt cell producing chlorine in daylight hours.

Does longer running waste energy?

It uses more, which is why schedules balance clarity against cost — especially with variable speed pumps.

Should the pump run continuously?

Rarely as a routine. Continuous running is used temporarily during treatments such as green pool recovery.
