The pool pump basket and strainer
The pump basket catches debris before it reaches the pump. A full basket starves the pump, and a poor lid seal lets air in.

The pump basket sits in the strainer housing in front of the pump and catches leaves and debris before they reach the impeller. When it fills, the flow drops, the pump works harder and the pool starts to show it as weak circulation. Clearing it regularly is one of the simplest useful things an owner can do.
Equipment guides cover servicing and faults on the plant an existing pool already has.
The lid seal matters as much as the basket. If the lid does not seal, air is drawn in and the pump loses prime or runs with air in the pot. The basket is cleaned, the seal is checked and cleaned, and the lid is tightened back so the pump draws water properly.
The short version
The basket catches debris
It keeps leaves and grit out of the impeller, but a full basket starves the pump.
The lid seal
A poor seal lets air in, so the pump loses prime or runs with air.
Clean it regularly
A quick check keeps the flow up and the pump working.
What the care involves
The basket
Lifted out, emptied and rinsed, so the flow stays up.
The seal and seat
Cleaned and checked so the lid seals and no air is drawn in.
The lid
Tightened back so the pot holds prime and the pump draws water.
Before cleaning the basket
Switch the pump off
The pump is off before the lid is opened, so it is not drawing.
Lift and empty
The basket is lifted out, emptied and rinsed clean.
Check the seal
Whether the lid seal is clean and seated before the lid goes back.
In practice
Switch the pump off before opening the lid, lift the basket out, empty and rinse it, and check the lid seal is clean and seated before tightening the lid back. A full basket starves the pump, and a poor lid seal lets air in and loses prime.
Mistakes to avoid
Opening the lid with the pump running
The pump is drawing while it runs. Switch it off before the lid comes off.
Ignoring the lid seal
A dirty or misplaced seal lets air in, so the pump loses prime. Clean and seat it before the lid goes back.
Common questions
How often should the pump basket be cleaned?
Whenever it has collected debris, which depends on the pool and the trees around it. A quick check each week, and after a windy day, is a sensible rhythm.
Why does the pump lose prime after cleaning?
Usually the lid is not sealing, or the seal is dirty or misplaced. Air is drawn in, and the pump cannot hold prime.
Can I clean the basket myself?
Yes, with the pump switched off. It is one of the few routine tasks an owner can safely do, alongside clearing the skimmer basket.
