Routine maintenance and cleaning
Keeping a pool maintenance log
Most pool problems are easier to solve when someone can see what the readings were last week and what was added since.

A maintenance log is a dated record of each visit or owner check: water test results, chemicals added and how much, cleaning done, the filter pressure, and anything noticed about the equipment. It can be a notebook in the plant room, a shared spreadsheet or the report a maintenance company sends after each visit.
Routine guides describe one part of regular pool care and how to do it properly.
Its value shows when something goes wrong. Cloudy water after a party, pH that keeps climbing, a pump that started cutting out — each is diagnosed faster with a record of what changed. A log also makes handovers easier when a villa is sold or let, or when a new maintenance company takes over.
The short version
Readings with dates
Chlorine, pH, alkalinity and the slower values when tested.
What was added
Product and quantity, so overdosing or build-up is visible.
Equipment notes
Pressure readings, noises, leaks and repairs.
What a useful log contains
Water tests
Every visit, with the sample point and method noted if they vary.
Chemical additions
Including shock treatments, algaecides, salt and stain products.
Work and observations
Backwashes, filter cleans, part replacements and anything that needs a decision.
Make the log easy to keep
- 01
Use one place
A single shared record, not scattered messages.
- 02
Keep it short
A line per visit is enough if it is consistent.
- 03
Review monthly
Trends — rising stabiliser, falling salt — show up over weeks.
Common questions
Should my maintenance company provide a log?
A record of readings and chemicals after each visit is a reasonable thing to ask for.
Do I need to record every test?
Recording each visit and any owner tests gives a useful picture.
Is a log useful when selling the villa?
Yes. It shows the pool and equipment have been looked after.
