Removing scale from pool tiles

White, rough deposits on pool tiles are usually calcium scale. Removing it is half the job; keeping it away is the other half.

Scale forms when calcium comes out of the water and bonds to the surface, usually along the waterline where evaporation concentrates minerals, and on infinity edges and spillways where water is thin and warm. High pH, high calcium hardness and heat all make it worse, which is why Dubai pools scale readily in summer.

Water guides explain what a reading or a symptom means and the order in which to correct it.

Removal needs care. Descaling products and pads chosen for the tile type lift the deposit without scratching glazed tiles, glass mosaic or the grout between them. Heavy, long-standing scale may need several treatments. Then the water itself has to be brought into balance, or the scale returns within weeks.

The short version

  • The water deposits it

Scale is calcium leaving hard, high-pH water — the waterline is where it shows.

  • Remove it gently

The wrong tool or acid can scratch glaze or eat into grout.

  • Balance stops it returning

pH and hardness control matter more than the cleaning itself.

How scale is removed

  • Descaling cleaners for pools

Products formulated for pool tiles, used to the label, often with the water level lowered slightly to expose the band.

  • Non-scratch tools

Pads and scrapers suited to the surface; glass mosaic needs the gentlest approach.

  • Professional cleaning for heavy deposits

Thick or old scale may need repeated treatment or specialist methods.

To keep scale away

  • Hold pH in range

High pH is the main driver of scale in hard water.

  • Test hardness monthly

And plan dilution before it climbs too far.

  • Clean the waterline routinely

Light deposits come off easily before they harden.

Common questions

Can scale damage tiles?

Heavy scale can dull glaze and trap dirt, and harsh removal can do more harm than the scale itself.

Is scale the same as a stain?

No. Scale is a mineral deposit you can feel; a stain is discolouration within the surface.

Will a pressure washer remove scale?

It may damage grout and is rarely effective on bonded calcium. Chemical and gentle mechanical removal works better.
