Routine maintenance and cleaning

Vacuuming a pool

Vacuuming lifts what brushing and skimming leave on the floor. Choosing where that debris goes — the filter or waste — is the decision that matters.

Drained pool with leaves and debris across the tiled floor, ready for a deep clean

Manual vacuuming connects a vacuum head and hose to a skimmer or dedicated vacuum point, using the pump’s suction. The hose has to be filled with water first, so the pump draws water rather than air. Slow, overlapping passes across the floor stop fine debris being stirred into the water.

Routine guides describe one part of regular pool care and how to do it properly.

Light debris can go through the filter as normal. Heavy loads — sand after a storm, dead algae after a green pool treatment, fine dust — are better sent straight to waste using the filter valve, so they do not clog the filter or pass back into the pool. Vacuuming to waste removes water, so the level is topped up afterwards.

The short version

  • Prime the hose first

A hose full of air can make the pump lose prime.

  • Filter or waste

Light debris to the filter; heavy sand, dust or algae to waste.

  • Slow passes

Fast movement stirs fine debris back into the water.

Step by step

  • Set up

Attach head and pole, lower the head and feed the hose in so it fills with water before connecting to the suction.

  • Vacuum

Work in overlapping lines from shallow to deep, watching the pump basket and pressure.

  • Finish

Return the valve to filter, top up the water level if you vacuumed to waste and clean the baskets.

Before you start

  1. 01

    Empty the baskets

    Full baskets reduce suction.

  2. 02

    Check the water level

    Especially before vacuuming to waste.

  3. 03

    Brush first

Brushing lifts debris so vacuuming collects it.

Common questions

Why does the pump lose prime when I vacuum?

Usually air in the hose, a small leak in the hose or a water level too low for the skimmer.

When should I vacuum to waste?

For sand, heavy dust, dead algae or debris the filter cannot hold.

Can a cartridge filter vacuum to waste?

Many cartridge systems do not have a waste setting; a separate pump or careful filter cleaning is used instead.
