Routine maintenance and cleaning

Cleaning the pool waterline

A dark or white band at the waterline is the most visible sign that a pool needs attention, and one of the easiest to prevent.

Drained pool with leaves and debris across the tiled floor, ready for a deep clean

The waterline collects what floats: sunscreen, body oils, cosmetics, dust and pollen form a greasy band, while evaporation leaves calcium scale behind. In Dubai, with strong sun, high evaporation and frequent swimming, the band forms quickly — sometimes within a week.

Routine guides describe one part of regular pool care and how to do it properly.

Light deposits come off with a soft brush or sponge and a waterline cleaner suited to pool tiles. Heavier scale needs descaling products used carefully so they do not damage the glaze or grout or upset the water balance. Regular light cleaning avoids the heavy work.

The short version

  • Oils and scale

    Two different deposits, often together.

  • Use tile-safe products

Household cleaners can foam or affect water chemistry.

  • Little and often

    Light cleaning prevents hard build-up.

Cleaning approach

  • Greasy band

A pool waterline cleaner and a soft sponge or brush.

  • Scale

Descaling products and non-scratch pads, sometimes with the water level lowered slightly.

  • Prevention

Showering before swimming and balanced pH reduce both deposits.

  • Infinity edges and spillways

Thin, warm water on edges and spillways scales faster than the main waterline and usually needs its own cleaning routine.

Before cleaning

  1. 01

    Identify the deposit

Greasy or crusty needs different products.

  2. 02

    Check the tile type

    Glass mosaic needs gentle treatment.

  3. 03

    Avoid household cleaners

They can foam or upset the chemistry.

Common questions

Why does the waterline get dirty so fast?

Sunscreen, oils and evaporation concentrate at the surface.

Can I use bleach or detergent?

Use products made for pool waterlines to avoid foam and chemistry problems.

Does an enzyme product help?

Some enzyme products help break down oils in the water.

How often should the waterline be cleaned?

Light cleaning at each maintenance visit keeps the band from hardening; heavy descaling should then be rare.
