Commercial pools

Planning a cleaning schedule for a commercial pool

A commercial pool needs some cleaning every day, but not every task every day. A schedule matches the work to the pool’s use.

Commercial pool cleaning combines frequent light tasks with periodic heavier work. Daily, or at each visit, the surface is skimmed, skimmer and gutter baskets emptied and visible debris vacuumed. Weekly, or as conditions require, walls, steps and waterline are brushed, gutters and grilles cleaned, and filters backwashed or cleaned according to pressure. Periodically, tiles, grout and surrounds are deep cleaned, balance tanks inspected and cleaned, and equipment serviced.

Commercial guides cover pools at towers, compounds, hotels, gyms and clubs.

The schedule has to fit around opening hours, peak periods and building rules. Heavy work goes into quiet times or planned closures; light work happens before opening. Recording each task lets managers see the schedule is being followed, and reviewing it each season keeps it matched to how the pool is actually used.

The short version

  • Daily light tasks

Skimming, baskets and visible debris, so the pool opens clean.

  • Weekly core tasks

Brushing, waterline, gutters and filter care.

  • Periodic deep work

Tile and grout cleaning, balance tanks and equipment servicing.

Building the schedule

  • Match frequency to use

Busy pools and peak seasons get more frequent visits and tasks.

  • Fit the opening hours

Light tasks before opening; heavy work during quiet periods or closures.

  • Record and review

Tasks logged at each visit, with the schedule reviewed every season.

Review the schedule when

  • Use changes

Holiday peaks, events or new opening hours.

  • Complaints rise

    About cleanliness, debris or clarity.

  • Features change

New water features, gutters or equipment add tasks.

Common questions

How often should a commercial pool be vacuumed?

Often enough to keep the floor clear; busy or exposed pools may need it at every visit.

Can cleaning happen during opening hours?

Light tasks often can. Brushing, vacuuming and deep work are better done when the pool is quiet or closed.

How do managers know tasks were done?

Visit records listing completed tasks, plus periodic inspections.
