Commercial pools

Keeping a commercial pool plant room safe

A commercial plant room holds bulk chemicals, pressurised equipment and electrics in a small, warm space. Order and separation keep it safe.

Commercial pools often store larger quantities of chlorine and acid than private pools, sometimes in drums or tanks feeding automatic dosing systems. These chemicals must never mix: acid and chlorine together can release harmful gas. Heat, poor ventilation, leaks and clutter add to the risk, and so does access by people who do not know what is stored there.

Commercial guides cover pools at towers, compounds, hotels, gyms and clubs.

A safe plant room is organised, ventilated and controlled. Chemicals are kept in their labelled containers, separated by type with bunding or spill trays, away from electrics and heat sources. Access is limited to trained staff, the door is kept locked, and housekeeping keeps walkways clear so anyone dealing with a leak or spill can move freely.

The short version

  • Separate acids and chlorine

Physical separation and spill containment prevent dangerous mixing.

  • Ventilate

Fumes and heat must have somewhere to go.

  • Control access

Only trained people should enter a commercial plant room.

Elements of a safe plant room

  • Storage layout

Chemicals stored by type, labelled, in bunds or trays, away from electrics and equipment.

  • Ventilation and lighting

Adequate air movement and light so leaks and problems are visible.

  • Emergency readiness

Spill materials, eye wash where appropriate, and clear instructions on the wall.

Regular plant room checks

  • Leaks and corrosion

At tanks, dosing lines and pipework.

  • Labels intact

    Every container clearly marked.

  • Walkways clear

No stored items blocking access or exits.

Common questions

Can chemicals be stored next to the filter?

They should be kept away from equipment and electrics, with separation between types.

Who should have access?

Trained maintenance and facilities staff only; the room should be locked.

What if a chemical spills?

Keep people away, ventilate, and follow the product’s safety instructions and site procedures.
