Commercial pools
Maintaining a hotel pool
Hotel guests judge the pool in a glance from a sunbed. Good maintenance keeps it right and stays almost invisible.

Hotel pools see the sharpest swings in use of any commercial pool. A sunny weekend or a full house can bring dozens of swimmers through the afternoon, with sunscreen, food and drink at the poolside; a quiet weekday may see a handful. The water has to look and feel right throughout, because a dull pool, a strong chlorine smell or debris on the floor is noticed straight away and reflected in reviews.
Commercial guides cover pools at towers, compounds, hotels, gyms and clubs.
Most maintenance is therefore done before guests arrive and after they leave: early-morning cleaning and testing, evening treatments when the pool is closed, and checks during the busiest hours that do not disturb anyone. Hotels also run on coordination — engineering looks after plant and power, housekeeping looks after the deck, security controls access — so the maintenance routine has to slot into the operator’s own procedures and record keeping.
The short version
Work around guests
Cleaning and treatments are done outside opening hours wherever possible.
Watch the peaks
Testing during busy afternoons catches falling chlorine before guests notice.
Fit the operator’s systems
Records, escalation and access follow the hotel’s procedures.
How the routine is structured
Before opening
Skimming, brushing, vacuuming, testing and adjustment so the pool opens clean and balanced.
During the day
Readings at agreed intervals, with a response plan if chlorine falls or water clouds during heavy use.
After closing
Shock or other treatments, filter care and equipment checks while no one is swimming.
Agree with the operator
Standards and records
Which readings are recorded, how often, and where the records are kept.
Escalation
Who is called for cloudy water, an incident or an equipment failure, and how fast.
Access windows
When the maintenance team can work, and which areas they can use.
Common questions
Can treatments be done while guests are swimming?
No. Treatments are timed for closures, and swimming resumes only after retesting.
How often is a hotel pool tested?
More often than a private pool, at intervals agreed with the operator and suited to the pool’s use.
What happens if a guest reports a problem?
The hotel’s escalation route is followed, and records show what was tested and done.
