Maintaining a gym or club pool

Training pools are used hard and on a timetable. The maintenance routine has to keep pace with both.

Gym and club pools host lane swimming, lessons, aqua classes and training squads, often from early morning until late evening. Swimmers exercising hard add more sweat and organic matter than leisure swimmers, so chlorine demand and chloramine formation are high. Indoor pools add a second issue: chloramines escape into the air, where poor ventilation leaves a strong smell and irritates eyes and throats.

Commercial guides cover pools at towers, compounds, hotels, gyms and clubs.

A routine for a training pool is built around the club’s timetable. Testing is frequent and timed around busy sessions, chloramines are treated promptly, filtration runs long enough for the load, and longer tasks — vacuuming, filter cleaning, treatments needing a closure — are scheduled into quiet periods or planned closures agreed with the club.

The short version

  • High bather load

Training sessions add more organic load than leisure swimming.

  • Air quality matters indoors

Chloramines in the water become chloramines in the air.

  • The timetable sets the routine

Maintenance is planned around sessions, not the other way round.

Routine for a training pool

  • Testing around sessions

Readings before and after the busiest blocks, with adjustments recorded.

  • Chloramine control

Prompt treatment of combined chlorine, coordinated with whoever runs the ventilation.

  • Planned closures

Short scheduled closures for deep cleaning and treatments that need an empty pool.

Agree with the club

  • The timetable

Including squads, lessons and private bookings.

  • Closure procedure

Who decides, how members are told and how reopening is confirmed.

  • Records

What the club needs to keep and for how long.

Common questions

Why does the indoor pool hall smell so strongly?

Chloramines from the water collect in the air. Water treatment and good ventilation both help.

How often should a training pool be tested?

Frequently, and timed around the busiest sessions rather than at a fixed hour.

Can maintenance fit between classes?

Testing and light tasks can; deep cleaning and treatments need planned closures.
